Annie Oakley (born Phoebe Ann Mosey, 1860 – 1926) was an American sharpshooter. Born into poverty on the Ohio frontier, she was hunting game by the age of eight to help support her family. Her marksmanship eventually gained her star billing in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and she became one of the highest-paid female celebrities of her day. But she never forgot her roots, giving her fortune away to other women in need. A believer women’s self-determination and self-defense, Oakley famously said: "I would like to see every woman know how to handle guns as naturally as they know how to handle babies."
