Badly-Made Chawan

$25.00

Small tea-bowl (chawan) with a very rough exterior! It exhibits “cratering” in the glaze, possibly caused by the use of a wild clay body. This piece wonderfully illustrates the Japanese principle of fukinsei (不均整), meaning asymmetry or irregularity. Fukinsei reminds us that change, decay— even ugliness— are essential aspects of being, and must be embraced.
