Cork Net Floats

$25.00

A set of vintage fishing net floats, made of natural cork. Cork is the bark of an oak tree (Quercus suber), which grows primarily in Portugal and Spain. The oak is a pyrophyte (fire-adapted) tree; its thick, insulating bark an evolutionary adaptation to the wildfires common around the Mediterranean. Cork is a totally renewable and sustainable resource; harvesting is done by hand, using nothing but hatchets and brute strength. These floats were (and are still are) used to keep the upper edge of fishing nets at the water surface. They do not contribute to the proliferation of plastics in the ocean! Set of three floats, with wonderful texture and vintage patina (larger quantities available).
