Exquisite, classic ikebana basket (hanakago) made from old, smoked bamboo (susutake). The barrel-shaped body is plaited in an irregular, open pattern, subtly incorporating thin bamboo roots (see detail images). A gorgeous basket, with exquisite patina and preservation. Probably early- to mid-20th century (Taisho or early Showa period).
