Heart of Holes

A heart-shaped piece of redwood burl from the windswept beaches of Northern California. It has spent some time floating on the open ocean, as evidenced by the burrowing of “shipworms” (actually marine bivalves in the family Teredinidae). This is what most of our hearts actually look like, after the age of oh, say, 35. Polished and sealed.

“The vessel, though her masts be firm / Beneath her copper bears a worm.”

From the poem “Though All The Fates,” by Henry David Thoreau.
