Trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis (1926 –1991) was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. After starting out performing with Charlie Parker's bebop quintet in 1944, Davis was instrumental in developing the “cool jazz” and “hard bop” sounds of the 1950s. His 1959 album “Kind of Blue” is one of the most popular jazz albums of all time. During the 1960s, Davis’ music became increasingly eclectic and electric. His 1970 fusion record “Bitches Brew” alarmed traditionalists while turning a new generation on to jazz. Davis grappled with the demon of heroin addiction throughout much of his career; he was the quintessential troubled, creative genius.
