Salt-Glazed Stunner

Unusually tall salt-glazed stoneware jug, decorated with a simple, cheerful cobalt-blue design. Either from Westerwald in Rheinland-Pfalz (where salt-glazed stoneware has been produced since the early 15th century), or possibly from Betschdorf, Alsace, where many Westerwald potters relocated in the early 18th century. Die-stamped "6 L" (six liters) near handle. A stunning example of utilitarian pottery elevated to the level of art.
