Wendell Berry (born 1934) is an American writer, activist, cultural critic, and farmer. Berry was part of the “back-to-the-land” movement of the 1960s; moving to a Kentucky farm, Lane's Landing, where he has remained ever since. A sense of place, and stewardship of the land, is central to his work. Berry makes frequent forays into the wider world to protest war and injustice, and to advocate for civil liberties and environmental causes. The meaning of this quote is this: If you’re going to devote the effort, make sure it’s for something important.
